You are not alone on complex cases

Magellan offers timely case management and peer support

When you determine that a patient you’re treating has a particularly challenging set of needs, which can include behavioral health symptoms that complicate medical concerns, you might not have the capacity or resources to address those needs. Remember that you are not alone—you can obtain timely support from Magellan.*

The Magellan Mental Health Service Administrator supporting commercial health plans in California offers a complex case management and screening program staffed by licensed clinical care managers. These behavioral health specialists are available to support you in your work with patients diagnosed with behavioral health and/or substance use disorders who would benefit from additional clinical intervention and treatment coordination.

Examples of our support services include:

  • Coordinating care with other providers when the member gives consent, ensuring that the treatment team is connected.
  • Coordinating services with the health plan when the member has medical issues requiring attention, or when they have authorization inquiries.
  • Screening of members for co-occurring depression and substance abuse conditions and linking patients to behavioral health therapists and psychiatrists as needed.
  • Providing additional support for members and families when you suspect a member may be suffering from severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Linking to behavioral health services and support groups in the community for increased stabilization and success.
  • Assisting members who are transitioning from a higher level of care to a lower level of care or home. Our care managers coordinate with both the patient and staff at inpatient facilities telephonically during the patient’s hospital stay, to ensure that the patient understands their discharge plan and has appropriate timely follow-up services in place.

How it works

When you contact Magellan, a care manager will discuss the case with you, and they will arrange for the additional resources needed to support the patient’s behavioral health wellness. Magellan clinicians help create a personalized plan of care for each patient.

Once you reach out to us and we enroll the patient into our case management program, we will take on the responsibility of supporting their complex needs.

Note that there is no cost to members for the additional case management services, as they are already included in the plan benefits.

How to access case management services

To access these services, contact the customer service number on the member’s insurance card and follow the prompts for mental/behavioral health; then ask for the Magellan case management team.

*In California, Magellan does business as Human Affairs International of California, Inc. and/or Magellan Health Services of California, Inc. – Employer Services.
